National Donut Day

Celebrate National Doughnut Day at one of these local spots

The first Friday of June is reserved for a very special confection: The Doughnut. Unlike many national food day celebrations, National Doughnut Day is not a marketing ploy to increase the sales of this delicious baked good, although it definitely helps. National Doughnut (or Donut) Day was created by The Salvation Army in 1938 to honor the women who served the doughnuts to soldiers in World War I. This day began as a fund-raiser for Chicago's Salvation Army. The goal of their 1938 fund-raiser was to help the needy during the Great Depression.
Today, we can celebrate this special occasion by supporting a few locally-owned doughnut shops.

Thai Eng is the owner of Clifton Donut Shop on lower Brownsboro Rd in Crescent Hill. He opened the store in January of 2015 and currently runs the bakery with his wife Davy Mork.
Eng says the first Friday in June is always a busy one, adding "It's a very happy feeling to see our customers walk in the shop with a smile on their face. It's a cheerful time for people to get to celebrate."
Eng also wanted to let his customers know that the shop will provide disposable gloves at the door and hand sanitzer at the counter, if needed.
Best seller? Their Maple Bacon Donut tends to sell out first. Eng advises customers to stop by the shop before 9 AM to get the best variety.

New name, same delicious donuts. You may remember the old State Donuts on Factory Lane, off Old Lagrange Rd near the Gene Snyder. The shop was originally owned by Stacey Trieu who passed away in October of 2019. Former cashier, Erica Hector asked the family if she could take over her dear friend's business and continue to build the legacy Stacey started. The family agreed and State Donuts re-opened its doors in January as Stacey's Donuts.
Stacey's Donuts is celebrating its first National Doughnut Day under the new name with a great deal!
