National Donut Day

Image
Celebrate National Doughnut Day at one of these local spots The first Friday of June is reserved for a very special confection: The Doughnut. Unlike many national food day celebrations, National Doughnut Day is not a marketing ploy to increase the sales of this delicious baked good, although it definitely helps. National Doughnut (or Donut) Day was created by  The Salvation  Army  in 1938 to honor the women who served the doughnuts to soldiers in World War I. This day began as a fund-raiser for Chicago's Salvation  Army . The goal of their 1938 fund-raiser was to help the needy during the Great Depression. Today, we can celebrate this special occasion by supporting a few locally-owned doughnut shops. Buffalo Bills quarterback Jake Fromm apologizes for 'elite white people' text Buffalo Bills rookie quarterback Jake Fromm has apologized after images surfaced of him referring to "elite white people" in a text conversation from a year ago. The conversation was dated March 2019, when Fromm was the starting quarterback at the University of Georgia, and was posted to Twitter Thursday by a user with an unknown connection to Fromm. In a text referring to guns, Fromm said "just make them very expensive so only elite white people can get them haha." The texts were released as protests over racial bias in the US and the death of George Floyd in police custody reached their tenth day in cities across the nation. Fromm posted an apology to Twitter Thursday, saying that the words he used were inexcusable. "I am extremely sorry that I chose to use the words 'elite white people' in a text message conversation," Fromm wrote. "Although I n...

Protesters decry growing distance from White House as troops form expanding perimeter Growing frustrations from protesters are largely commensurate with an increasing number of Army National Guard troops deployed to reinforce the White House perimeter WASHINGTON — Two days after crowds cleared Lafayette Square, flash grenades securing a path for a defining presidential photo op, demonstrators are now the farthest they’ve been from the White House since the civil unrest began. The president’s doorstep is now barely in sight from the public’s closest vantage points. Growing frustrations from protesters are largely commensurate with the increasing number of Army National Guard troops deployed to reinforce the White House perimeter. But in interviews Wednesday, demonstrators said they remained undeterred by distance, with personal stories of past police misconduct motivating their return for days to come. “I just want my voice to be heard, since my grandfather was killed when I was a baby,...

5.5 magnitude earthquake strikes near Ridgecrest in San Bernardino County A magnitude 5.5 earthquake rattled Southern Californians near Ridgecrest on Wednesday evening, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The temblor struck about 10 miles south of Searles Valley at 6:32 p.m. Ridgecrest is 14 miles west of the epicenter, which is also about 10 miles north northeast of Trona, according to the USGS. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, according to officials with the San Bernardino and Inyo county sheriffs' departments and the Ridgecrest Police Department. Seismologist Lucy Jones indicated the earthquake was probably an aftershock from a big quake that hit the area nearly 11 months ago. Last year, on July 5, a powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake rocked Ridgecrest and Trona, a day after a 6.4-magnitude quake centered near the Kern County town interrupted its Fourth of July festivities and sent residual tremors rippling across Southern California and parts of the So...

Drew Brees got an earful  from teammates and other pro athletes, such as LeBron James , for what he said Wednesday about protests during the national anthem. Then people in New Orleans let him have it. Marchers at a rally to protest police brutality and racial inequality cursed out the longtime Saints quarterback and city icon as they moved down a city street. Brees said in an interview with Yahoo Finance that kneeling for the anthem, which former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick started in 2016, is disrespectful to the American flag and those who served in the armed forces, such as Brees' grandfathers. Several current and former Saints players, including Alvin Kamara, Michael Thomas and Malcolm Jenkins, posted their strong disagreement on Twitter. Mark Ingram and Marques Colston also weighed in. More backlash came from two high-profile New Orleans/Louisiana people. Pro Football of Famer Ed Reed (born in Saint Rose) called a Brees a "chump" and a "punk" in an In...
